Will AI Replace Animators?

No, but the mechanical middle of animation work, in-betweening, rough animatics, background generation, is already being automated in parts of the pipeline. BLS itself flags this as a reason for slower hiring in the field. Character performance and studio-level creative direction are a different story.

Will AI replace animation

Animation writers working under a WGA contract already have a specific, enforceable floor. The 2023 WGA Minimum Basic Agreement states that AI cannot write or rewrite literary material and that AI-generated material is not treated as "source material," meaning it can't be used to strip a writer's credit or separated rights (WGA, Summary of the 2023 WGA MBA). A studio also cannot require a writer to use AI software, and must disclose if any material handed to a writer was AI-generated. Voice performers in animation working under SAG-AFTRA are similarly covered by that union's digital replica consent rules, the same protections built for live-action performers apply to a voice actor's likeness and voice (SAG-AFTRA, Digital Replicas 101). If your work is in character performance, storyboarding, or pipeline leadership, your role is comparatively durable, but it's worth knowing which of your own daily tasks fall on which side of that line, since most animators do some of both.
