AI in schools: the real pros and cons
Most students are already using AI for homework. Here's what the research actually shows about the benefits, the risks, and where the line sits.
The debate over AI in schools stopped being theoretical a while ago. By December 2025, 62% of students ages 12 to 29 said they had used AI for homework, up from 48% just seven months earlier, according to RAND's American Youth Panel survey. AI is already in classrooms. For most parents, teachers, and administrators, the real question is what it's doing to learning, and what to do about it.

Why the AI-in-schools debate is happening now
Three things collided at once. Chatbots became good enough to write a passable essay or solve a word problem in seconds. Every student with a phone got free access to one. And schools had no existing playbook for either the benefit or the risk. UNESCO's 2023 guidance on generative AI in education found that fewer than 10% of schools and universities had any formal policy on the technology at the time it was written. Most districts have been writing the rules after the fact, not before.
That gap shows up in the numbers. Pew Research's February 2026 survey of U.S. teens found 64% of teens have used an AI chatbot, and 54% have used one for schoolwork help specifically, mostly for looking things up or getting explanations. Parents consistently underestimate this. Pew's companion report on parents found a real gap between what teens say they do and what parents think their kids do.
The case for AI in schools
Time back for teachers. A Gallup and Walton Family Foundation survey found teachers who use AI tools at least weekly save an average of 5.9 hours per week, about six weeks over a school year, mostly on grading and lesson planning. Schools with a formal AI policy saw savings roughly 26% larger than schools without one, which suggests the benefit compounds when a district actually plans for the tool rather than just tolerating it.
Faster access to explanation. RAND's data shows students turn to AI most often to get a clearer explanation of an assignment (38%), brainstorm ideas (35%), or look up a fact (33%). None of that is inherently different from a tutor or a good textbook. The concern isn't that students are looking things up faster. It's what happens when looking things up replaces working through the problem.
A tool students will use at work anyway. Whatever a school decides about AI, students are headed into a labor market where these tools are already standard. Learning to use one well, including knowing its limits, is arguably part of the curriculum now rather than a distraction from it.
The case against AI in schools
Students themselves are worried. RAND's same survey found 67% of students believe AI use is harming their critical thinking, up from 54% earlier in 2025. That's a rare case of the group using a technology the most also being the most skeptical of its effects on them. It's worth taking seriously precisely because it isn't coming from outside critics.
Cheating is now a normal expectation, not an edge case. Pew found 59% of teens think AI-assisted cheating has become a regular part of student life, and Common Sense Media's national survey found 6 in 10 students believe the same, with a third saying it happens extremely often. That doesn't mean most assignments are AI-written. It means most students now assume some of their classmates' work is.
Detection tools are not reliable enough to lean on. Turnitin markets a 98% accuracy rate and under 1% false-positive rate for its AI detector, but that figure comes from the company's own curated test set. Independent research, including a University of Chicago Booth working paper that stress-tested detectors on real writing samples, put the sentence-level false-positive rate closer to 4%, and found seven different AI detectors flagged 61.3% of TOEFL essays by non-native English speakers as AI-written, compared to near zero for native speakers. Vanderbilt University disabled Turnitin's AI detector in 2023 over exactly this kind of bias risk. A school that treats a detector's score as proof is going to accuse real students of cheating they didn't do.
That gap between what detectors promise and what they actually catch is a real cost of leaning on AI in the classroom, not just a hypothetical one.
So where does the line actually sit?
Most of the disagreement isn't really about whether AI helps or hurts. It's about which tasks it touches. AI used to explain a concept a student is stuck on looks a lot like tutoring. AI used to generate the essay a student turns in looks like something else. The tasks are different even when the tool is the same, which is why blanket policies (allow everything, ban everything) tend to satisfy nobody.
What this means if you're a parent
If your child is one of the majority now using AI for homework, the honest starting point isn't a ban, since a home rule doesn't reach a school Chromebook or a friend's phone anyway. It's noticing which tasks the tool is doing for them and which ones they're still doing themselves. The cost is concentrated wherever the shortcut was taken, which is a useful thing to watch for rather than a reason to worry about every use of the tool.
Signs it's gone from tool to crutch
- They can't explain, out loud, how they got an answer they turned in.
- Grades on AI-assisted homework look fine, but test scores on the same material, done without AI, don't match.
- They reach for AI before attempting a problem, not after getting stuck on it.
- They've stopped asking you or a teacher for help and go straight to a chatbot instead, even for things you could explain in two minutes.
What tends to actually work at home
- Separate "check my answer" from "give me the answer." The first preserves the attempt. The second replaces it.
- Ask for the explanation, not just the output. If they can walk you through their reasoning without the AI open, the learning likely happened. If they can't, it probably didn't.
- Watch the gap between assisted and unassisted performance. A quiz or in-class test is a decent natural check on whether homework help is translating into actual understanding.
