There's a second layer that matters just as much day to day: client and stakeholder communication. A finished design has to satisfy an engineer's technical judgment, but it also has to satisfy a client's budget, a regulator's paperwork, and sometimes a room full of residents at a public hearing. Negotiating those tradeoffs, explaining a decision in plain language, adjusting a design to fit a constraint nobody wrote into a spec sheet, is relationship work that current AI tools aren't built to do.

Where the risk actually concentrates

The honest caveat is that engineering isn't uniformly safe at every level. Junior-level tasks, the repetitive drafting and checking work new engineers have traditionally used to build up judgment, are the segment absorbing the most AI assistance right now. That has a real second-order effect worth naming: if the traditional path to becoming a senior engineer runs through years of grunt work, and that grunt work is shrinking, firms need a different way to train junior engineers into the judgment senior engineers currently have. That's a workforce-design problem, not evidence the field itself is shrinking.

It's also worth being honest that not every engineering discipline carries identical exposure. Roles with more desk-based analytical work and less physical or safety-critical sign-off responsibility carry somewhat more task exposure than roles built around hands-on integration and field judgment. Two engineers with the same job title can have very different real exposure depending on how much of their week is spent on constraint-setting and sign-off versus repetitive drafting alone.

Track your own task mix honestly instead of reasoning from your job title. If your week leans heavily toward drafting, running standard simulations, or producing routine documentation, expect those specific tasks to keep getting faster and more automated, and get good at directing and checking AI-generated output rather than avoiding it. If your week leans toward sign-off, safety-critical decisions, or negotiating tradeoffs with clients and regulators, that side of the job is a long way from being automated, and it's worth making sure your role reflects that.

If you're early in your career, look for roles and mentors that give you real exposure to the judgment side of the work, since that's the skill that compounds and the one furthest from being replicated by a tool.
