That's the short answer. The longer, more useful answer is that not all offloading costs the same, and knowing the difference is what actually matters if you're trying to use AI without quietly losing a skill you care about.

The plain-language definition

Strip out the academic phrasing and cognitive offloading just means: you rearrange the world, or hand a task to a tool, so your brain doesn't have to hold or process it. You're not lazy for doing this. It's one of the oldest tricks in human cognition: tally marks, written language, and the printing press were all offloading, long before anyone had a name for it.

Risko and Gilbert's original examples were small and physical: tilting your head to read sideways text instead of mentally rotating the image in your mind, or setting a phone reminder instead of trying to remember an appointment. Later research broadened the term to cover almost anything that reduces the internal work a task would otherwise require: writing a grocery list, searching the internet instead of recalling a fact, or letting a spreadsheet run a formula.

Not every example belongs in the same bucket. Some offloading barely registers as a decision. Other kinds trade away a skill you might want to keep.

What the research actually shows

Two studies, a decade apart, map the territory well.

In 2011, Betsy Sparrow, Jenny Liu, and Daniel Wegner ran four experiments and found that when people expect to be able to look something up later, they remember the information itself less well, but remember where to find it more accurately, a pattern that's come to be known as the Google effect (Sparrow, Liu & Wegner, 2011, Science). Search engines had become a form of external memory, and people's recall habits reorganized around that fact without anyone deciding to make the trade.

More recently, a 2025 MIT Media Lab study by Nataliya Kosmyna put 54 people in EEG caps while they wrote essays, comparing a ChatGPT group, a search-engine group, and a brain-only group. The brain-only writers showed the strongest, most distributed neural connectivity. The ChatGPT group showed the weakest, and the researchers described the pattern building up over sessions as "cognitive debt." Many of the heaviest AI users also struggled to quote back essays they had just written minutes earlier (MIT Media Lab, 2025). It's a small, short-term study, so treat it as an early signal rather than a final verdict, but it lines up with what the 2011 search-engine research already suggested: offload the retrieval or the reasoning often enough, and the underlying skill gets quieter.

Is cognitive offloading good or bad?

Neither, by itself. The honest answer is that it depends on what you're offloading and whether you'd want that skill back later. Handing off a password costs you nothing you'll miss. Handing off your own first pass at a hard problem, every single time, is a different trade. You get the finished output faster, but you stop practicing the thinking that produces it.

The clearest rule from the research: offloading tends to help when you already have the underlying skill and the tool just clears busywork out of the way. It tends to hurt when the tool replaces a skill you're still building, because the struggle you skipped was doing the actual work of learning.
