Short answer: less than most other white-collar categories, and for a boring reason. Engineering and skilled trades work is full of tasks that require a body in a specific place, a license attached to a specific name, or judgment under conditions nobody has fully described to a model yet. That doesn't mean nothing changes. It means the change looks different here than it does in, say, accounting.

Look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2024-2034 employment projections for these occupations and a pattern jumps out immediately: every single one is growing, not shrinking. Mechanical engineers are projected to grow 9% (BLS), civil engineers 5% (BLS), electricians 9% with about 81,000 openings a year (BLS), architects 4% (BLS), mathematicians and statisticians 8% (BLS), and heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers 4%, roughly average (BLS).
None of that means AI is a non-issue here. It means the displacement, where it exists, is happening inside these jobs at the task level, not showing up yet as a shrinking occupation in the federal data. Goldman Sachs' 2023 analysis of task-level automation exposure found architecture and engineering work sits at 37% of tasks exposed to some degree of AI automation, well below the 46% for office and administrative work and 44% for legal work (CNBC). Physically demanding and outdoor work saw the least effect in that same analysis. That's the split that matters here: the desk half of engineering work is more exposed than the field half, and trades work leans heavily toward the field half.
Will AI replace mechanical engineers?
Not the job. AI tools now handle a meaningful chunk of the drafting and simulation work, generative design software can propose part geometries, and CAD assistants can catch clash errors that used to take a junior engineer an afternoon to find by hand. What AI doesn't do is decide which tradeoff matters for a specific product, sign off on a design that has to survive real-world stress, or manage the give-and-take between manufacturing cost and performance. Civil engineering is anchored to physical infrastructure that has to exist in a specific location, meet a specific code, and get inspected by a specific licensed person. AI helps with structural analysis, traffic modeling, and drawing generation, but a civil engineer's core job, deciding how a bridge or water system holds up over 50 years in a real environment, with legal liability attached, isn't something a model can absorb. This is the clearest "no" in the group, and it's worth spelling out why. Electrician work is physical, on-site, and legally gated: someone has to be licensed to touch a panel, and someone has to be physically present to run conduit through a wall that was built last week, not last decade. BLS projects 9% growth and about 81,000 openings a year, driven by ordinary building demand plus the buildout of solar and wind power, which needs electricians to tie new generation into homes and the grid (BLS). AI can help an electrician troubleshoot faster with a diagnostic app or plan a job from a floor plan. It cannot run the wire.

Will AI replace truck drivers?
This is the one where the honest answer is "eventually, on some routes, later than the headlines suggest." Autonomous trucking is real and moving faster than a lot of people assume: Aurora Innovation has launched second-generation driverless trucks and expanded its Texas driverless routes, logging over 12 million autonomous miles by early 2026, and signed a plan with refrigerated carrier Hirschbach to deploy 500 autonomous trucks starting in 2027 (Aurora Innovation; Trucking Info). Kodiak AI has similarly been running driverless freight on set Texas routes with a public 2026 driverless-launch target.
But look at what's actually being automated: long, predictable highway hauls between fixed hubs, not the full job. Local delivery, loading dock coordination, customer-facing stops, and anything involving unpredictable urban driving are a different problem, and BLS still projects 4% growth for heavy and tractor-trailer drivers overall through 2034, with about 237,600 openings a year mostly from replacing retiring workers (BLS). The realistic path is a shrinking share of long-haul highway miles going autonomous over the next decade, with local and specialized driving remaining a human job well past that.

Will AI replace pilots?
Less than the "single-pilot cockpit" headlines implied a few years ago. Airbus and others explored reduced-crew and single-pilot concepts for commercial aviation, but the regulatory ground has shifted against it: in June 2025 the European Union Aviation Safety Agency paused its research into single-pilot operations, concluding current cockpit technology can't match the safety record of two-pilot crews, and a US law in early 2026 further constrained the push toward reduced-crew flight decks (AeroTime; Simple Flying). Architecture faces some of the same desk-versus-field split as engineering. AI tools can now generate floor plan options, render visualizations, and check code compliance faster than a human drafter. What they can't do is take responsibility for a design that a client, a city, and a structural engineer all have to sign off on, or manage the negotiation between a client's budget and their ambitions. Ironically, one of the safer categories, and one people don't expect. Pure mathematical and statistical work, proving theorems, developing new models, doing the kind of open-ended reasoning that doesn't have a known answer key, is exactly what current AI struggles with most, even as it gets better at applying known methods. BLS projects 8% growth for mathematicians and statisticians through 2034, faster than average, with much of the demand coming from data-heavy fields that need statistical expertise to interpret and validate model output, including AI models themselves (BLS).
