Is Teaching Safe From AI?

Yes, teaching is one of the safer professions from AI, and the evidence for that comes less from predictions and more from what's actually happening in classrooms right now. AI use among teachers has exploded, RAND found the share of K-12 teachers using generative AI for work doubled in a single year, from 25 percent in the 2023-2024 school year to 53 percent in 2024-2025 (RAND). What hasn't changed is who's standing in front of the classroom.

That's the pattern worth understanding. Fast tool adoption doesn't automatically mean job loss, and in teaching's case the two are moving in opposite directions. The government's own occupation data backs that up in an unexpected way.

Is teaching safe from AI according to government projections?

Here's a detail most people miss: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't even project K-12 teaching jobs to grow much through 2034, and the reason has nothing to do with AI. Kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school teacher employment is each projected to decline about 2 percent over the decade, driven by demographic shifts in school-age population, not automation (BLS, Kindergarten and Elementary Teachers; BLS, High School Teachers). Even with that modest decline, BLS still projects around 100,000-plus annual openings for elementary teachers alone, mostly from people leaving the profession or retiring, which is a very different story from a field being automated away. Postsecondary teaching, meanwhile, is projected to grow 7 percent, much faster than average (BLS, Postsecondary Teachers). None of these projections cite AI as a factor. That absence is itself telling.

What AI is actually doing in classrooms right now

RAND's research shows adoption isn't uniform. It rises by grade level, and pre-kindergarten teachers lag well behind, with only 29 percent using generative AI in 2024-2025 compared to the K-12 average (RAND). Where it's landed hardest is in the deskwork: drafting lesson plans, generating practice problems, writing first drafts of feedback, adapting one worksheet into three reading levels. Teachers who use AI weekly save close to six hours a week doing this, based on Gallup and Walton Family Foundation survey data (Gallup).

Growth in adoption is also outpacing the guardrails around it. RAND's companion research on district policy found that training and clear usage rules are lagging behind how fast teachers are actually picking up the tools (RAND). That gap is a real management problem for schools, but it's a different problem than job displacement.

The part of teaching that doesn't move

Every one of the tasks AI is absorbing happens away from students, or at least away from the moment of instruction itself. None of it is the part of the job that actually defines teaching: standing in a room with twenty or thirty kids who are each having a different day, noticing that one of them just went quiet for a reason that has nothing to do with the lesson, and adjusting on the spot.

That's classroom management, and it's a live, moment-to-moment skill. It's also relational. Parents trust a specific person with their child for a school year. That trust, and the accountability that comes with it when something in the classroom goes sideways, sits with the teacher, not a tool. Which teaching roles carry more exposure

Risk isn't flat across the profession. Roles built around delivering fixed, standardized content with minimal live interaction, some self-paced online courses, scripted test-prep sessions, carry more overlap with what generative AI already does well.
