Should AI be allowed in schools?

Why "allow with guardrails" is where the research points
UNESCO's 2023 guidance for generative AI in education doesn't recommend banning the technology. It recommends the opposite: clear institutional policy, data privacy protections, an age threshold for independent use, and mandatory teacher training, built around the idea that AI is going to be used whether or not a school sanctions it. The data backs up why a flat ban is hard to enforce. RAND's American Youth Panel found 62% of students ages 12 to 29 used AI for homework by December 2025, up from 48% seven months earlier. What "allowed" looks like when it works

Teacher training, which UNESCO's guidance names as a condition, not an afterthought. A policy that allows AI without training the adults supervising its use tends to produce inconsistent enforcement.
Common Sense Media's national survey of teens found that among students who used generative AI for schoolwork, about half did so with a teacher's permission, which suggests a real, if partial, culture of sanctioned use already exists rather than needing to be invented from scratch.
The upside a permission-based policy is trying to capture
The case for allowing AI isn't just that banning it doesn't work. There's a real benefit on the table. A Gallup and Walton Family Foundation survey found teachers using AI tools weekly save an average of 5.9 hours per week, about six weeks a year, largely on grading and lesson prep. The same survey found schools with a formal AI policy saw savings roughly 26% larger than schools without one. That gap is the argument for "allowed and structured" over both "banned" and "anything goes." The policy itself appears to be part of what makes the tool useful rather than disruptive.
Where this framing runs into real limits
Allowing AI with guardrails assumes a school can actually monitor and enforce those guardrails, which isn't a given.
