Vanderbilt University disabled Turnitin's AI-detection feature in 2023 specifically over this kind of bias risk.

That means a school leaning hard on detection isn't catching cheating reliably. It's disproportionately accusing English-language learners and formulaic writers of cheating they didn't do, while missing more sophisticated AI use that doesn't trip the detector at all.

The equity gap AI widens, not closes

AI in schools isn't a level playing field. Students with reliable internet, a personal device, and parents who understand the tools well enough to set sensible limits get a meaningfully different experience than students without those things. A ban or a loose policy affects a student with only a school-issued Chromebook differently than one with an unrestricted phone plan at home. Data privacy is a real, underdiscussed cost
